This book is #43 in The American Adventure series. While the books are in chronological order, they can easily stand alone. This book is set in 1935 during the Depression. A fictional family's journey from Minneapolis, MN, to Seattle, WA, in search of work is detailed. The story touches on character issues such as how it can be difficult for some people to leave behind their homes or possessions, how you can experience both excitement and fear, and how your attitude toward challenges can affect those around you. It is also brought up that some people didn't view Japanese and Italian individuals in America kindly due to political events occurring in Asia and Europe. It's touched on without much depth, and little explanation of politics- just enough to help kids become aware that prejudices do exist. |
There was considerable discussion of the kidnapping of 9-year-old George Weyerhaeuser, an actual event which received widespread media coverage at the time. The characters in this book were concerned and wish they could be detectives to locate George safely, so they discuss the bits of news they hear about the case. It was not presented as a terrifying situation, but some kids may naturally be sensitive to the idea of kidnapping. This book provides a good opportunity to discuss the topic with your children. The child in this case was returned safely home following the payment of a ransom.
