"I Can Be Kind" MY First Manners Book is a Lift-the-Flap book, but it does not contain many different flaps per page (only one per spread of two pages) and the flaps are not varied in shape or size, they are a fold out to the right of the page. So, it has flaps, but it's not one of the peek-a-boo books that will keep a toddler or preschooler busy for 10 minutes checking out all the cool flaps. |
I suggest those ages because below the age of 2, many kids will find it irresistible to grab the book and/or the flaps if you're reading to them on your lap and this book won't hold up to that. Many kids over 5 would find it too short (it is 14 pages of reading and only the last page has more than one sentence) and simplistic, but they may enjoy the artwork. I would definitely suggest this book to be used in settings where an adult reads aloud to a group (where it is more likely the kids sit on the floor or across from the reader and will not have access to touch the book), such as nurseries, Sunday school and preschool courses, and the like. There is a nice list of ideas of how small children (and everyone) can have good manners in the back of the book which I appreciate because it includes some of the manners which seem to be overlooked more often in our society, such as "Don't interrupt," "Knock on closed doors," and "Hold the door for others." There are more suggestions than that, but those are the ones I appreciated the most.
If the durability was increased to be able to withstand being handled by the target age group, I would have given this book 5 stars.
