Having looked for a series appropriate for a teen without questionable content, we had read the reviews and decided to purchase the entire "Kingdom" series for our 13 year old. She loved them and suggested we read them aloud to our 7 year old soon. I confess, I haven't read any of Chuck Black's books before receiving "Cloak of the Light" to review. A few hints in the sci-fi direction put me off at first (I really am a "wet blanket, I don't like any sci-fi, including Star Wars, Star Trek, or even the Matrix movies. I know, I know.... but it's just not my thing), but I kept on reading because this book is written very well. Each sentence had a point, purpose, and meaning to it, no fluff. That means no yawning while reading, this book won't put you to sleep, it'll keep you up past bedtime! I can say that with all confidence because I finished this book in 2 days. I am a mother of 4 who homeschools, so I confess some housework was left undone during the reading of this book.
As if the plot of the book doesn't get your wheels turning enough, the author includes a study guide of sorts at the rear of the book. I was sure this would be too simplified, or just a regurgitation of things I already knew (BTW: I do continuously repent of my pride, but I hope my honesty in reviews assists others.),but paging through brought different aspects to light than I had previously been pondering. Whether you're looking for entertainment or something to challenge your imagination's eye into the world, you can't go wrong with this book.
- In the interest of full-disclosure: Blogging for Books provided this book to me for free in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are mine!
