I burst through the doorway
Into the garage
Straight past my father
Heading for a barely beaten down trail
Leading to my world.
The tears roll as I run
Without consideration
Of the branches and twigs
Slapping my face raw.
I can see the clearing-
I've made it to the field.
I jog along,
Slower,
I walk,
I fall to my knees,
Then collapse.
Lying on my back
Panting heavily,
I wipe my face dry
With a muddy, worn sleeve.
The day's trials behind me,
This is my world
And I focus my thoughts
On evening clouds.
It calms my nerves
And I begin to breathe slower,
Yet I'm now more aware
Of just how exhausted I am.
I feel as if a weight
Sits on my chest
And the feeling
Creeps back into
My lashed face.
Just watching the clouds
Drifting lazily along,
Rolling their great sculptures
Off to some unknown place.
My heartbeat
Is no longer frantic,
My eyes no longer teary,
But rather,
Open.
Open to the world.
My world.
No more yelling, swearing,
Fighting, stomping,
Door slamming,
Or wondering why.
Just me,
Lying here
Imagining the angels
Who give me strength,
Who love me,
On evening clouds.
