So easily, as if without a care.
Help me to be humble, Father,
As You remind me why it's there.
This tiny cup
Filled with juice or wine
Has such immense significance
According to Your design.
Is it here to quench a thirst?
The answer is two-fold.
First I must ask: Why
Do this cup you hold?
Did you take it out of
Obligation or perhaps tradition?
Did you only accept it because
To decline put you in an uncomfortable position?
How this cup may benefit you
Depends on the condition of your heart.
Have you at least tried to grasp
This communion in which you take part?
If not, the loss is entirely yours,
God needs nothing man could give or do.
But, oh how sad, you shall miss
The blessed grace He offers you.
God's Word cautions us against
Taking lightly communion in His name.
We were even supposed to make right our relationships
With others before we came.
Did you prepare in advance for today
Or come without a thought?
As Christ prepared to drink the cup before Him,
A mighty battle with eternal ramifications was fought.
His cup may not have been one like ours,
Literal, tangible, and filled with drink,
But our Lord and Savior instructs us
On what we ought to think.
"This cup is the new covenant of in my blood
Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
Christ drank the cup of God's wrath against sin,
By willingly shedding His blood on the cross, He has set us free.
The punishment for sin
Did not belong to Christ our Lord,
But He lovingly too it upon Himself
To pay the price we couldn't afford.
We could never make right
The sins we've committed over the years
And just anticipating the awful pain of taking our punishment
Brought the Lord of Creation to tears.
Fully man,
He wept deeply as He prayed.
Fully God,
Though He could have left, He stayed.
He stayed while they lashed Him,
Gouges in His skin bled.
He stayed while they mocked Him
And His heart broke at what they said.
Years He'd tried to save them,
To show them a better way
What seemed to be the end of His ministry
Was a painful, tragic day.
The tiny cup we are holding
Doesn't even begin to compare
To the cup of which Christ drank every drop,
Although it wasn't fair.
He never sinned.
He loved, taught and healed.
Never greedy, proud or cruel;
An example of how to yield
To the Lord's will
Walking according to His power.
Our selfish choices
Led to His darkest hour.
Jesus conquered death,
Paying the wages of sin
So that through a relationship with Christ,
A new life sinners can begin.
We can approach the Father
Without consuming fear.
He draws us close to Him
And that is why we're here.
You can hold that cup
Taking in communion's grace;
You can be refreshed with Living Water
And one day see His face.
