I was ten years old,
I was scared,
And confused.
Granted, things had never been perfect,
But, hey, no things are.
Fights, complaints, insults,
All just a part of my week.
No big deal, just life.
Life just went on,
As it always does.
I was ten,
They discussed divorce,
Shouts were exchanged,
Tears were shared.
We moved into separate places.
I got to see them both.
It was impossible at the time,
Horrible to the point,
I truly believe I couldn’t go back
And do it again.
I was ten,
But I survived,
Just barely.
It made me stronger,
I wouldn’t go back and change it,
Not for the world,
It’s part of who I am,
It’s the force behind my fight,
The light behind my hope,
It’s the part of my soul
That has the biggest dreams.
Dreams big enough
To fill the rest of my life.
Goals,
No requirements
For my time on earth.
I was blessed, beyond belief,
With struggles great and many.
Now I know
My place in life,
What it is I’ll do.
Just how to start
I am not sure,
I’m still young, but eager.
I feel as if age holds me back,
Though I am more than ten.
Out of the blue, it came to me,
A message from a little girl,
I sent one back
And so did she.
I fell in love, we became fast friends.
Then one day,
She sent to me,
A message far more grown up
Than I’d hoped she’d be.
She was ten years old,
She was scared,
And confused.
Granted, things had never been perfect,
But, hey, no things are.
Shouts exchanging,
Tears being shared.
It was impossible,
Horrible to a point,
That she’ll survive,
Just barely.
But I am here
To make sure,
That she’s stronger,
That her dreams
Stay a part of her,
Stay ten years old.
