Often we feel as if we’re not free to be ourselves.
No time to just relax.
Never a decision made completely solitarily.
Held back by society’s code of living.
It’s as if we’re individually given a brand and a mold.
Each brand describing the mold;
Each mold chiseled to the finest detail.
Many people take well to this guidance,
It gives them a sense of belonging yet remaining unique.
They go through day-to-day life acting and thinking
Exactly as expected of them.
Those people reach a point where they stop trying
To become the person that fits their mold,
And begin to believe that is who they truly are.
To them, differences from their mold are considered flaws.
On the other hand,
Many people realize that the image the world already has of them
Does not do them justice.
They see the mold as a barrier between others and themselves.
Day-to-day life is a struggle to break through the shell
And prove to the world that they are their own person.
To them, differences between themselves and the molds
Are simply ways to prove their inaccuracy in representing us.
Why, we wonder, are there molds, brands, reputations,
Stereotypes, and expectancies at all?
Because we create them.
