Two birds in a cage
Where they don’t belong.
With each other,
They manage to be strong.
Day after day,
Night after night,
They whisper to each other
Plots for the day they’ll take flight.
The birds were identical,
Same color and size,
Same clipped wings,
Same tear-filled eyes.
Together they sang
Songs of hopeful sorrow,
As they dreamed they’d have
A brighter tomorrow.
They toughed it out
Through horrible weather,
All through the storms,
They huddled together.
They waited for
Help from above,
And survived on
Each other’s love.
In the dark they sat
On a cloudy day,
Society came
And stole one away.
She was taken to
A bigger cage.
Separated and scared,
At first they complained in rage.
Time passed slowly,
Days seemed longer,
But everyone insisted
They were becoming stronger.
The birds missed each other
But had to cope,
Though alone in the world
They had no hope.
Society was sure
They’d get over the pain,
But one silent night,
A storm rolled in again.
One cried out for the other,
The sounds of a dying bird,
But too distant were they
And couldn’t be heard.
The bitter wind blew
And howled in their ears,
But they needed each other
Like they had in the old years.
They shrieked in pain,
Far too great,
Then lie dead,
Victims of fate.
