Cast on 20 sts.
Rows 1-2: knit
Rows 3-30: knit all odd rows, purl all even rows
Row 31: k4, kfb, k until 5 sts remain, kfb, k to end of row (22 sts)
Row 32: purl
Row 33: k6, kfb, k until 6 sts remain, kfb, k to end of row (24 sts)
Row 34: purl
Row 35: knit
Row 36: purl
Row 37: k4, BO 4 sts, k until 8 sts remain, BO 4 sts, k4
Row 38: purl
Row 39: knit
Rows 40-41: purl
Row 42: knit
Row 43-44: purl
Bind off. You can either sew up the entire seam in the back and the dress will slip on, or sew up the seam on the bottom half and attach a button and button loop at the top to leave the back "open" (shown below).
